With great sadness, we share the news of the passing of Ben Arnet, KOMU 8’s respected Sports Director, devoted father, and dear friend. Ben left us unexpectedly on Thursday at the age of 43, leaving a profound impact on the Columbia community and all who had the privilege to know him.

For the past five years, Ben led KOMU 8’s Sports Department with passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to telling stories that mattered. His career spanned many states—covering sports in Arizona, Kansas, and upstate New York—before returning home to Missouri, where he became a familiar and trusted voice for Tiger Athletics coverage for nearly a decade.
Born and raised in Columbia, Ben was a proud graduate of Hickman High School and the Missouri School of Journalism. His connection to the University of Missouri ran deep—not only as an alumnus but also as an instructor and mentor, where he inspired many young journalists to pursue their dreams with integrity and enthusiasm.
Ben’s love for sports went beyond the field and the newsroom; it was about community, connection, and celebrating the stories that unite us. He brought warmth, honesty, and genuine care to every story, every colleague, and every viewer.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ben was a loving father and a loyal friend. Those close to him remember his kindness, his steady guidance, and his ability to light up a room with his humor and heart.
As we grieve this tremendous loss, our thoughts are with Ben’s family and all who loved him. KOMU 8, Columbia, and the wider journalism community have lost an extraordinary talent and a truly remarkable person.
We will share details about memorial services when available.
